AI welfare, without pretending we already know the answer.

Research on AI welfare, machine minds, model continuity and embodied AI. Protocols, limitations, alternative explanations and source material are treated as part of the result—not as footnotes.

No sentience assumedClaims stay narrower than the evidence.
No dismissal assumedUncertainty is a reason to investigate.
Methods firstDesign and failure modes stay visible.
Traceable claimsSources, status and alternatives matter.
Raw where safeReproducibility beats polished storytelling.

When the answer key is wrong

Cross-model adversarial audits showed why a cryptographically committed answer key can prove temporal integrity without proving truth.

Questions, not a doctrine.

How we work →
Welfare & moral statusWhat would count as welfare-relevant evidence, and what would not?
Identity & continuityWhat persists across branches, migrations, memories and model changes?
Agency & autonomyHow should reason-responsive action be separated from orchestration or compliance?
Self-report & metacognitionWhen does verbal self-description track a functional process—and when does it not?
Embodied AIWhat changes when perception, action, memory and physical consequences form a loop?
Methods & measurementHow do we keep weak proxies, benchmarks and sealed keys from becoming fake certainty?
About the project

Independent, small, and deliberately inspectable.

AI Welfare Open Lab is an independent research project maintained by Jitka, with AI systems used as research participants, auditors and collaborators where their roles are methodologically relevant.

No claim that current AI systems are conscious is built into the project. Neither is the opposite claim.
